Design Principles Research: Symbolic Colors

Print Magazine 70.3 Fall 2016 Pg. 95
This ad utilizes colors that are not harmonious (red and blue). The ad uses symbolic colors, or colors that look good to the audience for sentimental reasons, because they are the colors of the American flag.

Design Principles Research: Color Discord

Communication Arts, November 2016 Pg. 24 Designer: Traci Daberko
This package design uses color discord, but it works in the overall design. The font and lines are also deliberately not harmoniums.

Design Principles Research: Creativity

Designer: Billington Hackley Communication Arts Design Annual 47, November 2006, Pg. 137
This poster is creative because it communicates a creative concept for a fundraising event to support a community arts program. The word Masquerade appears to be embroidered on the top with the details of the event below also in an embroidered font. The design is simple but the contrast and isolation draw emphasis. The masquerade image is repeated in text and in form.

Design Principles Research: Color Harmony Rules

Communication Arts Design Annual 47, November 2006, Pg. 88
This illustration has cool colors in the background. (Blue and Green) Yellow and red are warm colors that add vibrancy against the receding background. The brown birds also create interest. Green, red and blue a triadic color scheme. Yellow, green and red are a split complimentary system.

Design Principles Research: Subject Color Inspiration

Designer: Noah Woods, Illustration Work Book, Fall # 33, Pg. 375

I like the bright colors in this illustration. The layered collage look and geometric details are what attracted me to this image. Below the image is a sampling of the essential colors.

Design Principles Research: Subject Positive/Negative Space

Designer: Mark Stutzman Vol. 33 Fall 2011 Workbook Illustration Pg. 152
This composition uses positive and negative space effectively. The red molded face and tendril-like red lettering contrast nicely against the flat black background to create positive shapes. The face (or mask) floats in the negative space, while a woman is reclined on the side of the face. Her shadow creates another negative space. The light reflected off the images and type add dimension and distinguish the images from the background.

Design Principles Research: Subject Unity (Second try, with a better image.)

Ad by VSA Partners, Chicago, Lürzer's Archive February 2017, Pg. 37
I think that this ad shows unity in the color scheme and in the similarity of the models in the ad. The women are even dressed similarly to one another. Their dresses are pastel and so is the background in the photo. The product and the logo are not in pastel colors, but are united in bold colors.

Design Principles Research: Depth

Design by Curtis Baigent, Issue 201 Computer Arts, June 2012 Pg. 55

Depth - This image captures depth by using size variation. The diminishing size of the mountains in the distance are an example of this. The man is also more defined than the images in the distance, and the colors in the background are more subdued than the colors used in the foreground.

Design Principles Research: Rhythm

Biedronka Soups, Ad Agency: Duda Polska, Warsaw

This ad displays visual rhythm in the repetition of shapes. Repeating shapes of food make up each repeating concentric ring. I like this because the product or focal point is in the middle and the fresh ingredients move outward to illustrate what is in the product in an interesting way.

Design Principles Research: Subject Balance

Image from Communication Arts # 348, November 2006.  Design Annual 47.,
Balance-  This composition has spiral balance.  It is not symmetrical, but the spiral is balanced adding an increase in energy and movement.
