Design Principles Research: Subject Positive/Negative Space

Designer: Mark Stutzman Vol. 33 Fall 2011 Workbook Illustration Pg. 152
This composition uses positive and negative space effectively. The red molded face and tendril-like red lettering contrast nicely against the flat black background to create positive shapes. The face (or mask) floats in the negative space, while a woman is reclined on the side of the face. Her shadow creates another negative space. The light reflected off the images and type add dimension and distinguish the images from the background.
